Iran and My Dog Chester

By Joshua Lapidus October 3, 2012

I just got a two-year old Beagle/Dachshund, Chester. He’s as smart as a dog could be – but he started barking ferociously at me the other day when I wouldn’t let him have a bite of my mint-chocolate CLIF Bar.  All he is thinking is: You have food, I want food. You don’t need food. I…

The Student’s Choice: Vote and Win, or Don’t and Lose

By Joshua Lapidus September 24, 2012

Fact: The Democrats’ chances of winning in November if the youth – 18-29-year-olds – don’t turn out in droves are significantly diminished. The question on everyone’s minds until Clinton’s speech the Wednesday of the convention – Who is going to motivate the whippersnappers? Can anyone motivate us? President Obama certainly hasn’t been able to so…

$50,000 a Plate? Romney’s Israel Fundraiser Too Steep for Me

By Joshua Lapidus July 29, 2012

Mitt Romney, presumptive Republican nominee for President, is in Israel now to hold high-level meetings with his “friend,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and to host a fundraiser for high-rollers. I thought about going myself, but $50,000 a plate was a tad too steep for my taste. (Of course, I could also get a few…

Frank v. Kristol: Two smart Jews debate the election

By Gabriel T. Erbs May 7, 2012

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said this is not the first time he’s been invited to defended GOP positions in front of Jewish audiences. “Not a pretty sight,” he said. It made sense that, as Kristol debated Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) in front of the 2012 American Jewish Committee’s Global Forum crowd, his positions on…

Jewish media mogul compares Palestinian people to unicorns [pause, not]

By Harpo Jaeger April 17, 2012

Apparently Facebook is more accepting of Palestinian peoplehood than, oh, I don’t know, Newt Gingrich. Obviously, this joke was too good to be missed, so I posted this very screenshot to Facebook earlier today.  David (the Editor here) aptly pointed out that Facebook isn’t actually claiming that the Palestinians are a people, just that there do in…

By Zach C. Cohen March 7, 2012

Rick Santorum: President Barack Obama’s policies on Iran are  “another appeasement, another delay, another opportunity for them to go forward while we talk.” Mitt Romney: “As president, I’ll be ready to engage in diplomacy. But I will be just as ready to engage our military might.” Newt Gingrich: “The red line is now.” Somebody was catering to…

Running on Religion to the White House [Campaign 2012]

By Zach C. Cohen February 23, 2012

For a nation focused on separation of church and state, there’s an inordinate amount of church in this race to run the state. Over the past week, presidential candidates have made religion a forefront issue for the presidency. Democratic strategists suggest the Republican contenders are looking for another way to attack President Barack Obama since the economy…

Your (Republican?) grandparents pick Romney [Florida!]

By Zach C. Cohen February 1, 2012

The Jewish state has spoken. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney should be president. Oh, sorry, I was talking about Florida. It may not be the most Jewish state in the Union, but it’s certainly the first in this presidential primary voice to have a sizable Chosen People population choosing. The GOP’s Favorite Lukewarm Son won Florida…

Ron Paul’s biggest (Jewish student) fan

By Zach C. Cohen January 19, 2012

David Deerson went to Jewish day school, attended and worked at a Jewish summer camp and he has been to Israel multiple times. He also thinks the Jewish State might as well be in Wyoming. And he’s voting for Ron Paul in 2012.

Deerson is a regional campus coordinator for Students for Liberty, a Libertarian college activism organization, and the vice president of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill College Libertarians. His love for the limited government philosophy has made him an avid Paul supporter, but Deerson is a calmer advocate for libertarian values than his bombastic political hero.

When it comes to Israel, Deerson says his views match up completely with Paul’s.

Obama – Iran, not Israel, is your enemy

By Gabriel Schivone January 18, 2012

In October 2011, I did not find out that captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was going to be released by reading newspaper articles or watching television reports, but because an entire street was closed off to allow for the singing and dancing brought on by the announcement. Many Israeli teenagers are in the army, making a noticeable difference in the lives of their neighbors. While American college freshmen learn how to read and analyze articles about weapons and warfare, 18-year-old Israeli soldiers are trained in how to protect their families and friends. It is not fair for the rest of the world to judge Israel for doing what it takes to survive. How can we understand the mentality of a country that survives despite a day-to-day struggle? How many other countries have to fight for recognition from their neighbors? How many had to fend off war on three different borders mere hours being declared a country? Would any other country be raked over the coals for standing up to the threat of nuclear war?

Santorum in a Jewish frat? Emphasis on the ‘-ish’

By Zach C. Cohen January 9, 2012

Yep. You heard correctly. Former Pennsylvania Senator and current presidential candidate Rick Santorum was a brother in Tau Epsilon Phi, a historically Jewish fraternity. Before Santorum graduated in 1980, he joined the Epsilon Phi chapter of TEP at Pennsylvania State. The chapter is now dormant. Don’t worry, the super-Catholic candidate for the White House didn’t compromise his…
