December Without the Dilemma

By bspringer | Comments Off on December Without the Dilemma

Christmas! ’Tis the season, and at our house Santa is an equal opportunity present provider. Hadn’t you heard? Santa Claus? Formerly Shlomo Clausstein, total Heeb. I know we’re not the only Jewish family to celebrate Christmas in addition to Hanukkah. I’m sure there are plenty of us out there. Some might call it assimilation. I […]

Hityavnut (Hellenization)

By bbarer | 1 Comment

I’d like to focus on something I mentioned very briefly in my overview of Chanukkah which has been coming up in my mind as I consider life back home: namely, Hityavnut or Hellenization, or what would today be called assimilation. The word gives varied messages manifested in different languages. Hityavnut is an example of a […]

The Reading List: Peter Beinart Lives!

By Ben Sales | Comments Off on The Reading List: Peter Beinart Lives!

In other words, people are still debating his column from six months ago. First, Roger Cohen says that Jewish organizations in the US need to abandon “Israel right or wrong,” and quotes J Street U employee/rock star Ira Stup–who works in our office–throughout the article. [NYT] Then Gary Rosenblatt casts doubt on Beinart’s evidence and […]

The (Double) Reading List: When a “Maccabeats” reference goes too far

By Ben Sales | 1 Comment

Today the concerned and compassionate editors of New Voices are offering you a double reading list to apologize for dropping the ball on these roundups yesterday and on Monday. Enjoy these ten worthwhile links from the Jewish internet: We all love Maccabeatlemania, but here’s how we shouldn’t use the craze that’s sweeping American Jewry. On […]

Reaction to the UF Hillel Menorah Vandalization

By akinman | 3 Comments

As some may have read recently on the New Voices blog, UF Hillel’s menorah was uprooted from the ground and vandalized on site this past Saturday morning. The menorah that acted as a reminder to the Jewish student population that we stood as a strong community, lay broken and shattered in Hillel’s front courtyard. Deeply […]

Say “Yes” to the Snuggie

By jcohen | Comments Off on Say “Yes” to the Snuggie

There is no denying it; the temperature of college dorms can be as unpredictable as the weather in Chicago. One moment it’s exceptionally hot, the next, no blanket is warm enough. For the heat, I have no suggestions, but for the cold, I have one word for you: Snuggie. Yes, that’s right, I said Snuggie. […]

UBC Gets a Taste of Middle East Politics

By mmoncaster | 2 Comments

The hot Jewish news coming out of Vancouver detail a donation dispute (which you would know if you have been following the campus recaps). The controversy surrounds the Social Justice Centre (SJC), a resource group at the University of British Columbia. The organization authorized to donate part of its budget to projects promoting social justice. […]

Will Technology Save the Next Generation of Jews?

By ckessler | 7 Comments

At a post-GA-meet-up yesterday, Jeff Finklestein, the CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, threw out this question: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing your generation? He meant this in a Jewish context, and attendees’ answers touched upon leadership (or lack thereof) in our age group, and delegitimization of Israel (that […]

Menorah at UF Vandalized

By Ben Sales | 5 Comments

A group of about ten vandals damaged the University of Florida Hillel’s menorah early Saturday morning, according to Hillel Executive Director Keith Dvorchik. Dvorchik told New Voices that at around 11 p.m. on Friday night, Hillel staff saw about ten men walking through Hillel’s property shouting, “F-ck you, Jews! Happy Hanukkah!” Police came and told the men […]
