History

Published since 1991, New Voices is the official magazine of the Jewish Student Press Service (JSPS) — the only independent Jewish and justice-focused magazine by and for Jews ages 18–24.

Founded in 1971 as a nonprofit wire service for Jewish campus publications, JSPS has long been a launchpad for emerging journalists. Many of today’s most accomplished Jewish journalists got their start at the Jewish Student Press Service. Current and past editors of the New York Jewish Week, Forward, Dissent, Jewish Telegraph Agency, Lilith, and Sh’ma are all past contributors to the Jewish Student Press Service. Our alumni have also gone on to staff positions at the New Yorker, L.A. Times, and Columbia and CUNY Journalism Schools.

Today, through New Voices Magazine, JSPS continues its educational mission: a tradition of cultivating the next generation of Jewish journalists, creating media that speaks to young Jews, and empowering Jewish students to hold accountable the institutions that raised them. The magazine is produced by one recently-graduated Editor in Chief and a network of student writers and editors from campuses across the country on a shoestring annual budget. The Press Service is an educational organization, giving hands-on experience in the world of Jewish publication to all its writers and editors.

The Press Service and its many student editors and writers are supported by our Board of Directors, composed largely of previous JSPS editors and writers who remain passionate about the future of Jewish journalism and independent media.

JSPS Historical Papers & Archival Documents

Though JSPS's publishing work today continues through New Voices Magazine (est. 1991), the articles published by the Press Service are a significant historical treasure trove, documenting the opinions, attitudes, political consciousness, and major questions on the minds of Jewish students from the 1970s-1990s. While many of the physical JSPS archives are housed at the Center for Jewish History, many documents remain in the hands of JSPS and New Voices Editors.

Editorial Team

Our magazine is by students, for students. There have been many iterations of editorial teams throughout our existence as a press service, from desk jockeys in a Park Avenue cubicle to a digital age blogging cohort. Since 2018, New Voices has offered year-long, paid fellowships for Jewish college students, and in 2024 this fellowship program evolved to include a highly selective cohort of student journalists to serve as our inaugural Editorial Team. From Berkeley to Brooklyn, we are incredibly proud to host some of the brightest, most prolific emerging minds in Jewish media.

Our editors represent all facets of Jewish life on campus, and direct the flow of content that emerges on both our virtual and print platforms. They are responsible for hundreds of pitches that come to New Voices from young reporters across North America, they host and program local events on their campus, and have a free platform to hone their own writing practice through opinion pieces and personally directed investigations. New Voices fellows form a tight-knit community as progressive Jewish media-makers, deepening their Jewish identities together, supporting one another personally and professionally, and getting to know each other through monthly virtual meetings and workshops with their cohort.

Editor in Chief

Julia Hegele

Julia Hegele

Editor in Chief, New Voices
Executive Director, Jewish Student Press Service

Julia is a writer, researcher, editor, and zine maker – with six years of experience in publishing under her belt. In a youthful attempt to expatriate, she started her career in student publishing as an Arts and Culture Editor at the Glasgow Guardian, later serving as a columnist for Glasgow University Magazine. Her time in Scotland developed a passion for spotlighting Jewish populations in unorthodox locations, sharing their stories and art through her publication, Golem Zine, which is currently in its fourth iteration. She also served as as Arts and Culture Editor to the indomitable feminist collective, Clitbait Blogs, and contributed to Yente Zine, Potluck Zine, Coin Operated Press, Jewish Zine Archive, and more.

In 2022, Julia penned New Voices Magazine's most-read article ever: an investigation into Jewish summer camps and the treatment of LGBTQ+ youth. A long time New Voices fan, she had the honor of serving as Associate Editor in Fall 2023. Julia has received an MA in Arts and Public Policy from NYU Tisch, and works in her very little spare time as a dramaturg and performance artist.

If she is not behind the editor's desk, you can find Julia somewhere in Brooklyn reading, kvetching, or baking for her friends.
