Available Position: Editor-in-Chief, New Voices Magazine/Executive Director, Jewish Student Press Service
The Jewish Student Press Service is looking to hire a recent or soon-to-be college graduate to serve as its executive director and as the editor-in-chief of the national, independent, progressive Jewish student magazine New Voices. The editor oversees the magazine, fellowship programs, conference organizing, fundraising, and budgeting.
This full-time position will begin in May/June 2024.
New Voices (est. 1991) is the country’s only magazine written by and for Jewish college students. Now a web-based publication, New Voices is published by the independent, nonprofit Jewish Student Press Service (est. 1970).
This job is a fundamentally unique and valuable experience for a recent college grad who is passionate about journalism, media, and the Jewish community. The New Voices Editor/JSPS Director gains meaningful experience in publication as well as nonprofit management. New Voices and JSPS have launched the careers of countless journalists, as well as others who have gone on to tremendous accomplishment in the Jewish world and beyond.
The annual salary is $50,000 and can include health benefits. This has traditionally been a two-year position, filled by a recent college graduate. New York City residence is preferred but not required. The editor may set their own schedule for working from home vs. coming into the office.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- Excellent writing skills
- Strong interest in Jewish and student issues
- Interest in Jewish education & mentorship
- Extremely self-motivated
- Some journalism experience preferred
- Fundraising experience is also a plus
Job Description:
On the editorial side, the editor of New Voices Magazine is responsible for every aspect of producing an online Jewish student magazine, including editing, mentorship, and publication.
On the nonprofit side, the executive director of JSPS is responsible for running and sustaining an independent nonprofit organization that has been around for over 50 years.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a self-starting young journalist who would be excited to have an incredible degree of autonomy to run a magazine that engages Jewish students across the country.
The editor determines the overall editorial direction of the magazine. Working with a team of volunteer student writers and editors from across the country, the editor generates high-quality content for newvoices.org and explores Jewish issues from a unique student perspective.
As executive director, the position is responsible for fundraising (donor cultivation, grant writing/reporting), audience development and marketing, and tasks related to general nonprofit administration, including building relationships with other publications. This position is also responsible for coordinating, leading, and facilitating both the annual Jewish Media Fellowship and Jewish Student Media Conference.
The position answers to a volunteer board of directors that is composed largely of former editors of the magazine who are available for advice and guidance.
