It’s embarrassing to admit that I sometimes see movies because I have celebrity crushes on the people in them. But this fall, I have a newer, more expensive problem: New Broadway plays are coming out, and two of them star two of my biggest, strongest celebrity crushes.
First, I heard about Jake Gyllenhaal (a Jew!) performing in If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet. I have absolutely no idea what that play is about, if it’ll be good or why the name is so long, but I really want to see it. Luckily for me and fans all over New York, the show opened on September 20.
Today, even more exciting news came out: Not only will Scarlett Johansson (a Jewess!) be starring in a new show, but it’s a show I’ve even heard of. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is being revived, with showings beginning on January 17, 2013.
Gyllenhaal kind of fell off my radar of Top Celebrity Crushes after Ryan Gosling re-appeared on the Hollywood scene last year, all brick-abbed and sultry-sweet, but expanding his repertoire to include stage acting is doing a lot to push him to the top of the list again. Johansson never really left, although her portrayal of the home-wrecking biznatch in He’s Just Not That Into You did leave a slightly bitter aftertaste in my mouth.
Being as I’m more or less the very definition of a poor college student—or at least one with little money to spend on Broadway shows—I might have to limit my stalking to hoping I walk past the theaters as the shows are coming out (a.k.a. stand outside the theater all night, every night, until they come out to sign my autograph). Either way, this is definitely some of the most exciting Jewish news to happen in some time.
