It’s tempting to call freshman Penina Yaffa Kessler a rookie reporter. But that would be misleading. We first met her back in May at our Jewish Student Journalism Conference. This was right after we had moved into our new office, inside the offices of the Forward. Penina told us that she was a rising freshman and that she was going to be spending her summer as an intern at the Forward, where, among other things, she wrote this piece that she interviewed me for. She also, of course, worked on her high school newspaper and comes from a family that already has some journalist blood in it.
Now, she’s one of our new national correspondents, you’ll be able to see her reporting from Wesleyan University here in New Voices every month. Her first story (over here) has everything: Jews and non-Jews, camping, hurricanes and more! She’ll also be writing one of our blog columns soon. Hers will be called Fresh Off The Block and it’ll be about–what else?–the freshman experience.
