Last week, spurred on by an excellent article, I mentioned the whole “Jews are the chosen people” thing. This week, Rabbi Donniel Hartman wrote about this same topic, albeit within the context of Passover. It’s short but sweet, definitely worth the read. I am continually impressed by Hartman’s writing because he conveys meaningful messages with elegance. In this case, he emphasizes that while we should celebrate our relationship with G-d, we should not succumb to feelings of superiority. He concludes:
“It is true that we were once slaves; now, however, we are free…It is in our hands to show that Jewish pride and a sense of God’s love for us need not lead to arrogance and blindness to the needs and rights of others.”
