Move over, Maccabeats. Coming from AEPi and ZBT with their Blackberries, Gucci bags, designer clothes and leggings, the Jews of Michigan rock their cultural materialism in “Pursuit of Jappiness,” a paean to all of those Jewish American Princes(ses) on campus.
Will most of the organized Jewish world look at this as another sign that young Jews don’t appreciate the true value of their heritage? Maybe. But along with Hillel and Chabad, for some people this is what being a college Jew is about: raised in privilege, coming to campus and partying with your friends from Scarsdale, the North Shore and Pico-Robertson. Drinking, sleeping late, shopping and signing up for Birthright.
Maybe most Jewish college students aren’t like this. But if you’re not one, odds are you know one.
As the song says: “If you know what I’m talkin’ ’bout, I guess you’re a JAP.”
