I wrote recently that the holiest day of the University of Texas year and the holiest day of the Jewish year would coincide next fall when the Red River Rivalry (the big game to end all big games) will be played on Yom Kippur.
One story I somehow missed until now about this was an editorial by Austin-American Statesman columnist Ken Herman. The headline reads: “Sometimes being faithful means skipping football.”
Sure thing, Ken. And I’m sure many will skip the game.
But sometimes being faithful means being unnecessarily excluded from the activities of the broader society.
And sometimes being responsible leaders in a religiously pluralistic society means checking a variety of widely-observed religious calendars before scheduling major secular events.
Just saying.
