Vandals defaced the future frat house of Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) at the University of Memphis, covering it with swastikas and writing “Welcome 2 Frat Row, Jews,” according to reports by the JTA and Eyewitness News in Memphis, Tenn.
Thomas Holland, the president of ZBT, suggested to Eyewitness News that the incident may have been a prank conducted by members of another fraternity who did not realize the gravity of their actions, but he later told the university’s student newspaper, the Daily Helmsman, that he did not believe members of another Greek organization committed the crime.
While ZBT is a traditionally Jewish fraternity, only one of the Memphis chapter’s members is Jewish, according to the Helmsman.
The paper also reported that the university has launched an investigation into identifying the perpetrator of the crime but has so far made little progress.
ZBT rented the house for recruitment last month and is in negotiations with the university to buy it, the Helmsman reported.
