New Year, New Voices Thoughts on the Homeland-Diaspora Question With the Jewish New Year fast approaching, we’re spotlighting two new voices in this issue of the New Voices Web Wire. The first voice is that of Eli Braun, a Jewish college student who wanders the streets of the Israeli desert town of Be’er Sheva. Jews may consider Israel a homeland, but he feels more at home in the Diaspora. He examines such topics as land, belonging, holiness, war and peace. Be sure to read the September/October 2005 issue of New Voices for more on this theme. Plus, an added bonus: a queer reading of Modern Hebrew vocabulary. The second voice speaks to us from the grave…by way of the big screen. Tim Burton’s new movie, “Corpse Bride,” opened Friday. It’s a ghoulish retelling of “The Finger,” a folktale written by the 16th century Kabbalist, Rabbi Issac Luria of Safed. Robert Levin gives us a review of the movie and explores its Jewish undertones. And, to drum up some anticipation and excitement...included in this issue is a sneak preview of an article in an upcoming New Voices print magazine exploring another American voice. It’s the voice of an American born-and-bred religion that holds an unconventional view of ancient Jewish history and religion: Mormonism. Maybe you have a voice of your own that is waiting to be heard? Give that voice a pen and paper (read: Microsoft Word) and shoot us an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it We publish anything of interest to Jewish college students: breaking news, shocking scandals, exclusive interviews, rants and raves, fiction and poetry. We’d love to hear what you have to say. And be sure to sign up for your free subscription to the magazine. “The House & Home Issue” is being printed as we speak!
