Holiday and the Pen: A Match Made in Eden? The Jewish holidays: crowded prayer rooms, spiritual highs, feasts, fasts and…the stuff of writing? Why is it that holidays prove such a meaty source of nonfiction material? I’d like to propose that, in addition to seasonal timeliness, holidays present a type of texture unique from all others. The holidays seem to wed exactly the right ratio of the intangible to the physical—the atonement to the pre-fast chulent, so to speak. The combination of cantorial sopranos and rumbling stomachs; of branch-covered huts and spilling wine; of that ethereal concept of New Year to sticky honey-mantled hands is, in fact, what writing seeks to seize. This edition of the Web Wire includes an insight into our mystifying New Year customs and a personal essay on the journey from Reform to Orthodox. Also find a piece on modern Jewish dating on and off campus and a review of the new film, "The Protocols of Zion," with some input from director Marc Levin. And be sure to check out the upcoming November/December issue of the print magazine for an additional review. So, in the name of new beginnings and day-old kugel, read on!
