A Sneak Preview Jackson County is a sleepy county of 650,000 residents located in northwest Missouri. To most Americans, this location in the heartland of America doesn’t even register a blip on their radar screens. Many Americans might even call it far from paradise. But if you’re a Mormon, you know something that most of America does not know: Jackson County is paradise. Or was, at least. According to Mormon belief, Jackson County, Missouri is the actual site of the Garden of Eden, the very hometown of Adam and Eve. And that’s just the beginning of the story: according to Mormon scripture, at the time of the Second Coming, Jesus will make an appearance in Jackson County. Two temples will be built—one in Old Jerusalem, where the Dome of the Rock stands today, and one in New Jerusalem or New Zion, names that stand for—you guessed it—Jackson County. Mormon theology and history, born right here on the soil of the United States of America in the nineteenth century, is replete with echoes of Jewish symbols and stories, and not only concerning the location of Biblical sites. Mormons believe that the Native Americans are the descendents of a Tribe of Israel. They believe that they too are tribal descendents of Israel—and, in a way, consider themselves the cousins of Jews. This is just a sneak preview of an article that will appear in an upcoming print issue of New Voices magazine featuring conversations with Mormons. Other topics to be discussed: the step-by-step process of a baptism for the dead and the Mormon fascination with genealogy. Also, the latest news about the Holocaust controversy within the Mormon Church. We won’t give away all of our surprises just yet…stay tuned for the next issue of New Voices magazine.
