Bruchim HaBaim! Welcome to Israel! Come explore exciting tourist sites like the Western Wall, Masada, nightlife in Tel Aviv, and…the Separation Wall? In a climate of fear, terror, oppression, and growing infrastructure of walls and checkpoints, more and more human rights organizations and peacemaking expeditions are offering tours of the Separation Wall and are arranging excursions deep into the West Bank so tourists can meet Palestinians and see what’s going on behind Israel’s cement blockades. Call it “conflict tourism;” different from for-profit tourism, it hopes its tours will be unnecessary in the future, when a true peace finally comes to Israel/Palestine. But for now, think of the possibilities! Be awed by the creative graffiti! Climb over the not-yet-completed segments! Your kid’s bar mitzvah at the Western Wall, the reception at the Separation Wall! The opportunities are endless! Stay tuned to the May/June issue for an in-depth discussion of the ins and outs of conflict tourism: the fragile line between an important activist tool and - “Look here!” - conflict voyeurism.
