Kadima Wins, Senior Citizens Gain For those of you who have been holed up in your iTunes library for the last month, here is a quick re-cap of the 2006 Israeli elections. As expected, Ehud Olmert’s hand-me-down Kadima Party came out on top with 29 seats in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament in which no party has ever won a majority of seats. Labor picked up 20 seats, and Bibi Netanyahu’s Likudniks faired worse than Martin Scorsese on Oscar night, picking up only 12 seats for the once dominant party. Shas matched Likud, and Meretz came out with five seats. As promised, Olmert says that Kadima will be moving ahead with plans for a partial withdrawal from the West Bank, with or without the blessing of the newly empowered Hamas government taking the reigns for Palestinians. Voter turnout in the March 28th Israeli election was the lowest in history, with only 63% casting ballots. The real story of the day was the Pensioners Party, which grabbed seven seats with only one issue – a domestic issue – on its slate: taking care of pensioners. The golden-agers achieved a seven-seat gain for the brand new party by steering clear of the conflict altogether.
