Point-Counterpoint: Debating the Issues that Matter Point: Jewish dancing can be a wonderful manifestation of the Jewish spirit. By Rabbi Zalman Rabinowitz As a rabbi for the last 25 years, I’ve had the opportunity to witness the wonderful ways in which traditional Jewish dancing can invigorate a community. Whether it be dancing the hora at weddings or the Israeli dance classes that take place at my synagogue on Sundays, Jewish dancing can be both fun and spiritually renewing for Jews from all spheres of life. Counterpoint: Why do the Jews consider running in a circle dancing? By Joey Smith This Jewish friend of mine invited me to his wedding the other week. I was having a pretty good time, and then all of a sudden everyone got up and started running in circles. I had no idea what was going on. I thought maybe they were playing musical chairs or something, except there weren’t any chairs as far as I could tell. I turned to this Jewish guy next to me and asked him what the hell was going on, and he said, "They’re dancing." I thought he was joking, so I asked a few others and everyone gave the same answer. I just don’t get it.
