Old Jews off Broadway [Arts]

Whoever thought that Bubbe’s track suit could help her land a part Off Broadway? All she’d have to do is stand up, tell a joke, and she’d be part of a long tradition of old Jews who love keeping the youngin’s in stiches. Old jews telling jokes is a source for cute, quick humor that is simple, clean and hilarious. The website features short videos of old Jewish people telling different jokes. Each video is themed, with previous themes including: “Talking Dog,” “Plastic Surgery,” and “Air Conditioning.”

Now the site is becoming the basis for a new Off Broadway production, “Old Jews Telling Jokes: The Off-Broadway Play!” Directed by Marc Bruni, the play showcases five actors who take the old jokes we are all familiar with and reinvent, replay, and reinvigorate them with fresh energy. The New York Times reports that the show will also “feature songs – old and new – and pay tribute to comedy giants of the past and present.”

One can only imagine what kind of songs are in the mix, perhaps a number from “Funny Girl?” maybe a satire of “Sunrise Sunset?” Nevertheless, the production is rooted in classic Jewish comedy. While casting has not been announced, it would be interesting to see if any of the familiar faces from the web series will be appearing on stage. Conversely, this blogger wonders if any beloved Jewish comedians, such as Jerry Stiller, will be considered for the roles.

No matter what entails, this show should prove to be a hilarious undertaking. Even if Bubbe never makes her big (Off) Broadway debut, she may enjoy her grandchild’s company for dinner and a show. Previews for “Old Jews Telling Jokes: The Off-Broadway Play!” begin May 1st, with an opening scheduled for May 20th at the Westside Theater.
