The Reading List: “Shanda for the Goyim” Edition

For those of you who don’t know, a shanda for the goyim–a traditional Yiddish term–occurs when a Jew does something that shames us in the eyes of the world. On that note, here are some shandas. Enjoy:

Not surprisingly, our first shanda comes from Facebook via Tumblr. In an album titled “Army- The Most Beautiful Years of my Life,” former Israeli soldier and current Israeli idiot Eden Abergil posts photos of herself posing next to blindfolded Palestinian prisoners… then comments on their boners. Really. [Sachim] [The Lede]

In the latest in “morally impure, ritually pure,” a disgraced Satmar Hasidic rabbi convicted of pedophilia and now serving in New York’s Rikers Island makes a prison guard go all the way into Queens to get him glatt kosher meals–even though the prison already offers kosher meals to its inmates. Yet another sign that our correctional system is working. [New York Post]

To wrap up yesterday’s hullabaloo over Harvard’s not divesting from Israel, the latest wise piece by Jeff Goldberg criticizes the impulsive and hasty news media cycle for creating a story out of rumors. To our credit, we here at New Voices reserved our judgment until we knew the facts. [Jeff Goldberg]

In an update to David Wilensky’s tip on the Mets’ kosher woes, it turns out that the team may still be keeping traditional Jewish law. [JTA]

A positive development in a nasty story: to counter the homophobic, anti-semitic Westboro Baptist Church, a community started www.penniesinprotest.com– and raised $14,000 for tolerance. [PenniesInProtest]
